Building Types of Construction -

Type 1 Being Most Fire-Resistive and Type 5 is Least Fire-Resistive
As Defined by the 1997 Uniform Building Code Chapter 6 Section 602 ---
TYPE 1 FIRE-RESISTIVE BUILDINGS
602.1 Definition.

The structural elements in Type 1 Fire-Resistive buildings shall be of Steel, Iron, Concrete or Masonry.

Walls and permanent partitions shall be of Noncombustible Fire-Resistive construction except that permanent non-bearing partitions
of One-Hour or Two-Hour Fire Resistive Construction, which are Not part of a shaft enclosure, may have Fire-Retardent -Treated Wood within the assembly.
Materials of Construction and Fire-Resistive Requirements shall be as Specified in Section 601-and Chapter 7.

Section 701- Scope
This chapter applies to Materials and Sytems used in the Design and Construction of a building to SafeGuard against the spread of fire and smoke within a building and the spread of fire to or from buildings.

Section 606 --- TYPE V (5) BUILDINGS

606.1 Definition.
Type V buildings may be of any materials allowed by this code.
Type V One-hour buildings shall be of One-hour Fire-Resistive construction throughout.
Materials of construction and fire-resistive rquirements shall be as specified in Section 601-
Classification of All Buildings By Types of Construction and General requirements.

610.1 General
The requirements of this chapter are for the various types of construction and represent varying degrees of public safety and resistance to fire.
Every Building shall be classified by the building official into one of the types of construction as set forth in Table 6-A.
Any Building that does not entirely conform to a type of construction as set forth in Table 6-A shall be classified by the building official as having anequal or lesser degree of fire ressistance.

This information is presented here in an effort to help the public understand there is significant difference between Type 1(I) and Type 5(V) Building Construction.
